SSi Micro Ltd. is the premier communications service provider in Northern Canada. SSi Micro required a partner to supply it with cellular infrastructure technology to help bridge the digital divide between the North and the south of Canada by enabling new communications services for consumers, business and government including high performance broadband, mobile voice and data, telemetry application, video conferencing and more.
Star Solutions’ LTE + GSM cellular network solution was an ideal fit for SSi Micro. With ample experience deploying cellular systems over satellite backhaul networks, Star Solutions cellular network solution leverages distribute network architecture which pushes network technology to the edge of the network.
The network solution includes the Sonata EPC platform, which provides 4G core network functions including: HSS, MME, Serving GW and PDN GW capabilities. SSi Micro set up small data centers in remote communities and deployed the Sonata EPC in those data centers in virtual machines. Each community is outfitted with IP based basestations from Star Solutions providing GSM and LTE network coverage.
In addition to Star Solutions’ experience in deploying cellular solutions over satellite, its core network platforms (Sonata EPC and Sonata MSC/HLR) support distributed network architecture. For SSi Micro, this meant that any local voice or data traffic in remote communities serviced via satellite backhaul would not need to transit the satellite network. This capability not only offers satellite backhaul savings but also improves voice quality of local mobile calls within the community.
